7 wonderful winter themed children’s books

February 1, 2017

At the moment we have a selection of winter themed children’s books on our swing bookcase. We love this bookcase as it makes it a lot easier for young children to see the book covers and select a book. I don’t always theme the selection but at the moment they are all snow themed so I thought I’d share some of our favourite winter themed children’s books.

It’s snow day, Richard Curtis, Rebecca Cobb

it's snow day, Richard Curtis, Rebecca CobbA heart warming story about the unlikely friendship that develops one snow day between a student and his strict teacher. A beautifully illustrated, magical story with lots of winter fun.

The Gruffalo’s child, Julia Donaldson The gruffalo's child

I’m sure you’re familiar with the following up to the hugely popular The Gruffalo. This time the Gruffalo’s child is out looking for the big bad mouse. Another great rhyming story with lots of repetition that children love.

The magical snow garden, Tracey Corderoy, Jane Chapman

The magical snow gardenThis is a beautiful story of a penguin who dreams of having a garden but obviously, plants do not grow in the snow. Not to be deterred he makes a beautiful garden out of wrappers and buttons. An inspiring story about achieving our dreams against the odds. Beautiful illustrations too.

One snowy night, Nick Butterworth

one snowy night

This might just be me favorite of the lot. This is a lovely story about a park keeper who is visited by lots of the park’s animals one snowy night. They are all cold and looking for somewhere warm to spend the night. Of course, he lets them all stay.

Betty and the yetti, Ella Burfoot

Betty and the yeti

Another great rhyming story with a winter theme. Betty finds a winter hat, scarf and coat when out walking in the snow. She sets out to find out who they belong to and stumbles across a not so scary Yeti. A lovely tale about friendship.

Millie-Mae in winter, Natalie Marshall

Millie-Mae in winter

We have all 4 seasons in the set now. My eldest has loved them since we got them. This is a short story about what Millie-Mae gets up to on a snowy winter’s day. We particularly enjoy the textured pages such as this sparkling, snowy page.

I’d love to know what your favorite winter themed children’s books are? Is it one of these or are we missing a great book?

  1. This is a lovely collection! One Snowy Night is one of our favourites. I used to put the DVD on during Snow Days at school. It’s a lovely tale. I like to have a themed basket of books too!
You might like ‘Pip and Posy The Snowy Day’ by Axel Scheffler too.

  2. Fantastic selection of winter books. It’s a good idea to change books round every so often as it keeps them fresh. Works for all toys too. Shame we’ve not had any real snow this winter (yet) to give little ones experience of the real stuff 🙂

    1. Nothing wrong with a book obsession! We were given this book shelf and at first I though it woudl take up too much room but now I love it and can see the benefits.
