Children's books

Dear zoo, what we’re reading

January 14, 2014

IMG_7792This is a book I picked out for my baby to receive for Christmas and I’m pleased to say she seems to like it so far and I’m sure she will love it even more when she is a bit older. I have to admit that this isn’t a book I remember from my childhood, even though it was published the year after I was born (1982). As I was talking to other parents and reading about children’s book, Dear zoo was one that kept popping up so I decided to seek it out.

IMG_7796I feel it is important to make books fun and accessible for babies and young children. There are certain types of books that are must haves and one such type of book is the lift the flap books. These add an extra element to books that babies and young children love.

IMG_7788Dear zoo is a very simple book but it is fun for young children. There is a lot of repetition too as the child in the book writes to the zoo to ask for a pet but they keep sending ones that are inappropriate for different reasons relating to the nature of the animal sent. As such there are lots of opportunities to learn about different animals such as names, the sounds they make and descriptions.

I’m linking up again this week with Carie at Space for the butterflies. If you’ve been reading head over their and link up or look for more inspiration.

  1. I’m almost embarrassed to say that we don’t own Dear Zoo – it was published after I was born which gives me half an excuse but I think I might need to rectify that before too long, it looks so much fun!

  2. Dear Zoo is such a great book for babies and toddlers, my two still read it now even the almost-seven year old. I was seven when it was published, so definitely not one from my childhood! We used to know it off by heart. A great list of books read, thank-you for linking to #300PBs.
