E at one month

July 11, 2016

E was one month old a couple of days ago. It feels to have gone very fast but also like she’s been here longer if that makes sense. We’re still in the sleep deprived, barely leaving the house, newborn bubble.

She was weighed at 3 weeks and had put on 12oz in a week. This put her at 7lb 12oz and still on the 25th percentile. I’m guessing she’s over 8lb now. She definitely looks bigger and sturdier.

Clothing size

The only clothes she has almost grown out of are the smallest ones we bought new this time (when we realised that all her big sister’s first size clothes were too big). The up to 1 month clothes are still really big on her. I’ve mostly kept her in baby grows this month.

Feeding

We are still exclusively breastfeeding and it is going well. Her latch has improved significantly and I would say she latches well near enough first time, every time now. Probably the biggest change this month is the frequency of feeds. In her 0ne week update, I mentioned she was routinely going 4 hours or more between feeds which is exactly what my eldest was like. I don’t remember the last time she went this long anymore! She was doing one four hour stretch in the night up until 3 days ago and that was very much appreciated. During the day she is feeding at least every 2 hours sometimes more. At first, I thought it was a growth spurt but this has been the norm now for at least the past 2 weeks. I’m struggling to get out as I never know when her next feed is. She’s obviously growing well on it but if she could go back to going fours once in the night that would be much appreciated.

My eldest had reflux (although quiet mild) and I sometimes wonder if the tiny ladybird is going to be the same. She’s been sick (like a whole feeds worth) about 4 or 5 times now and gets hiccups a lot. I was told not to worry last time as long as she was gaining weight and not projectile vomiting which she isn’t.IMG_5885

Sleeping

I think you will have realised by now that she’s not sleeping that well. She had fallen in to a pattern of falling a sleep between 9 &10:30 and sleeping until somewhere between 12 and 1am (once or twice she even made it past 2am). After a feed and often a nappy change she’d usually go back for 2 – 4 hours before waking again. I was getting either 3 two hour blocks of sleep or a 2 and a 4 hours block of sleep. I was doing pretty well on 6 hours sleep. She would go back after the second feed but she is usually noisy (crying in her sleep) or sometimes she is hard to settle, often waking every 30 minutes from 4am onwards. More often than not she will sleep in my arms/on my chest but wake the minute I put her in her basket or cry in her sleep. The minute I pick her up she stops and starts drifting off to sleep again.

Recently we had a few nights where the being unsettled has started at 2 or 4am, meaning I’m pretty much awake from this point onwards.

Miscellaneous

She’s awake and alert more in the day and watches us intently with her big eyes. You can tell when she is happy as her little arms and legs kick & wave about. She is fascinated by black and white images. She still hates baths, washes, getting dressed and nappy changes.

  1. She is absolutely gorgeous xx – I hope the sickness doesn’t last too long and she goes longer between feeds so you can get a bit more sleep #marvmondays

  2. Oh, she is beautiful.
It’s a long time since my own children were babies but I remember those days of broken sleep and seemingly endless feeds. My son in particular would only sleep if someone (usually me) was holding him but he didn’t sleep in his cot, his pram or even his car seat – which was a shock as I used to take the others for a ride in the car if they were being particularly resistant to sleep.
And then you blink and it’ll be all boyfriends and cars lol.

  3. Great update post! Its so lovely to capture all the little details when they grow so quickly. Our little one is 3 weeks old and I’d really like to start doing something similar so that I dont forget it all. I cant believe how quickly time flies when you have a newborn! Thanks for sharing this on #MarvMondays. Emily
