This week is National storytelling week so I knew I had to tell you about a story book this week, rather than a collection of nursery rhymes or number primer etc. We’re going on a bear hunt seemed the obvious choice. Who doesn’t love a childrens’ book with a sense of adventure and excitement flowing through the pages?
We’re going on a bear hunt is about a family who set off on an adventure to catch a bear. On the way they encounter various obstacles that they can’t go over or under so they have to go through. These include grass, mud, a river, a forest, a snow storm, and a cave. Once they get to the cave they discover a bear but instead of catching it as they planned they get scared and run back home through all the obstacles in their way.
Poppet enjoys it already due to the repetition and all the fun noises I make (swishy swashy etc) as we read through the book. I can see this being a book that grows with her though. When she is older, I can see her reciting the story whilst we are on trips out such as stumble trip, stumble trip, as we walk through woods. There are plenty of ideas for learning through play from this book available on the internet, such as this great idea for tuff spot play and these sensory bottles. There is even a stage version of it now.
There are various formats of the book available and we chose to buy the jigsaw board book. It’s a large (A4) board book with seven 12 piece jigsaw puzzles embedded in the book. At the moment Poppet enjoys it as a board book and as I mentioned last week, the large size is an advantage to her, as she finds it easier to turn the pages. I hope that in time she will still enjoy the story and will be keen to do the puzzles too.
300 picture book challenge
As I mentioned in previous posts, myself and Poppet have not been feeling well this week. Just horrible coughs and colds but I almost lost my voice at one point so we have not read as much we would normally.
You can find the full list of what we have read so far (and a brief review of each) on my pinterest board.
