Many couples decide to make the most of the last few months before their first baby arrives by going on a holiday. How better to make the most of the time than jet setting abroad to enjoy some much needed rest and relaxation?
Of course, I wouldn’t advise travelling late in pregnancy (especially if flying), but during those earlier months, a couple of weeks away could be just what you need.
So with that in mind, let’s take a look at some ideal spots for those couples eyeing up a mini break.
Portugal hangs off the western coast of Europe and despite its popularity, is often overlooked for Spanish resorts. However, the Portuguese coast is stunning, especially CasasNaAreia, slightly inland in the midst of serene countryside and pine forest – but close enough to the ocean to enjoy sunset views of dolphin pods.
Great food and great sights – what is there not to love about the romantic country of Italy? And we’ve got just the destination for you. Try Amalfi Coast, made a UNESCO Heritage Site in 1997 with its beautifully contrasting scenery of lush green against the Tyrrhenian Sea backdrop. There’s peace and relaxation in abundance for those keen on an escape from the madness. Or how about Tuscany? We got married in Tuscany and an amazing stay. The perfect mix of sightseeing and relaxation.
For an almost guaranteed warmer climate, the island of Antigua is one of luxury. It’s found in the West Indies and Jumby Bay is a particular hotspot for pregnant mums. It’s quiet, intimate and gorgeous, the ideal spot to unwind and forget the hassles of everyday life. It’s only an eight-minute boat ride from the main Antiguan island, so there’s always the option of coming back across for day trips.
The UK’s actually a brilliant place to explore – with diverse culture up and down the country and numerous spots of peace and tranquillity. Bath is particularly excellent, just an hour from London and filled with amazing Georgian architecture. Try one of the spa resorts in the city and enjoy acres of park and woodland, whilst treating yourself to some much needed TLC. I hope one day to visit Bath. Or how about the Lake District? You are spoilt for choice of amazing accommodation (including many spas), locations and places to enjoy a meal.
Okay, so we’ve cheated a little with the first one because the US is a massive place. We’ll narrow it down a little though and hand California as the place to go if you have a baby on the way. If you want a quieter scene than the bustling San Diego and Los Angeles, try The Cliffs Resort in Pismo Beach. It’s around three hours from Los Angeles and offers an And Baby Makes Three package – perfect for a couple’s getaway.
And there you have it. Five countries where pregnant women and couples can relax and enjoy the last moments before a child comes into their world.
