After the success of our autumn family bucket list, I thought I would do another one, this time for Winter. If truth be told, I don’t really like winter. I’m ok with December as I love the build-up to Christmas but once Christmas is over it’s just cold and wet without the festive activities. With this in mind, I have put together some ideas of things we can do as a family these next couple of months. Just little things to break up the cold, wet and dark days.
Paint snow or if we get enough snow, go sledging. We got some snow in December that F loved. E didn’t seem quite as keen, I think she just got too cold. If we do get some more on a weekend I’d love to take F sledging somewhere or even just build a snowman in the garden. We never seem to really get enough for a snowman. Last year F enjoyed painting snow and ice, this doesn’t need much snow at all.
Wrap up warm and go for a couple of winter walks. Visit a museum or gallery. We visited Eureka! on New Year’s Eve and I’d like to take the girls back at half term. I’d also love to take them back to the World Museum in Liverpool where we had a very quick visit some time ago. Or perhaps we’ll try somewhere closer to home like the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry.
Take the kids swimming. F has weekly swimming lessons but I haven’t taken E in months.
Read lots of winter books about snowy lands. I shared 7 wonderful winter themed children’s books last year and I shared another 5 picture books about winter yesterday.
Drink hot chocolate with F. Feed the birds. Last year we made pine cone bird feeders. Perhaps we’ll do this again or simply just buy a bird feeder. Either way, I know both girls will enjoy watching the birds feed in the garden.
Set up a winter-themed sensory play activity for the girls. They loved this one that was set up at Eureka!
Do some crafts and art with the kids. F loves anything crafty and E loves to draw too. We have been sent the Mud+Bloom nature craft subscription box to try out. It’s aimed at children 3-8 so is perfect for F. We made a start with the January box last weekend and F really enjoyed it. I look forward to the other activities and February’s box too.
Try a few new recipes for meals. I wrote about my love of cooking and how this has changed since F became a fussy eater last week. I’m determined to try new recipes and find some more meals we can all enjoy.
Bake with F. We baked gingerbread biscuits for F’s teachers before Christmas and she loved it. I’m determined that we will do more after school on Fridays or over the weekends.
Spend a Sunday morning at family forest school. F loves forest school and every few weeks will ask to go. There is a session in early February that I hope to take her to and I’ve discovered Quarry Bank Mill (National Trust ) are doing a monthly Nature explorers family event so we’ll be trying these too.
Start planning our spring and summer adventures. Cheating I know but we have made no plans for this year and I love to have things to look forward to. We are hoping to go on a few short camping trips this summer so I’m going to start looking for some nice sites. I’d love to hear what activities you enjoy in winter in the comments below.

I’m the same, I’m just not a fan of winter, so I love little lists like this to make you remember the good bits. You can’t beat a hot chocolate, and the subscription kit looks really cute. I think our tiny bit of the country was the only part f the UK to miss out on the snow recently!

Oh, I so wish I knew about the painting snow when we had our measly 1inch in December. It felt like we were the only ones not sledging or making a snowman. Love the bucket list. Going to do this with Henry, especially the museum as he would love the dinosaurs x

I never thought of painting snow either! What a fab idea and so much fun! Im not a fan of winter, I don’t deal well with the cold!! We try to make the winter as much fun as possible to hope it passes quicker!

Ohh, such a cool idea that you have your family bucket list based on seasons. I guess I will copy this idea when I have my own family too. Cool way to keep the bond in line with the season…
We’re at the museum almost every week, but you’ve reminded me we should take the boys swimming again soon! Wish we’d get more snow too.
Oooh, lots of great ideas here! We love days out, visiting places like an animal park, a castle or the beach. As long as the weather isn’t too bad, those places are great in the winter, too.
And on bad weather days we do crafts, baking, play dough, games… and quite a bit of screen time as well to be honest ☺️x
