Yesterday we made the most of the weather and headed to watch the lambing at Blaze farm, Wildboarclough. We’ve been to this farm in the Peak District before so knew what to expect but this was the first time we’ve been at lambing time. F is almost 4 so it felt like a good time to start taking her. She’s fascinated by babies at the moment too.
For £1.50 per person, you can go in the Lambing shed where if you’re lucky you will see lambs being born and you can hold a 1-day old lamb.
We were lucky and saw a sheep give birth to twins. The first was facing the wrong way so the farmer has to help her out. Luckily all turned out well. We learnt lots about lambing. F was fascinated and whispered, “it’s pooing a baby!” She also asked to hold one. She held one for a minute or so before having enough. If I’m honest, she looked pretty nervous holding it. She wouldn’t even stroke it when I was holding it. She’s not stopped talking about it since though. We will definitely take the girls back next spring.
As well as being in the middle of Lambing season, they also make and sell the most delicious ice cream. There is a tea room, a pottery (where you can decorate plates etc), nature trails, old tractors that kids love to sit on, a tunnel slide built into the hillside and a variety of animals. As well as watching the lambing, we enjoyed ice creams and a look round the farm. Unfortunately we did not have time for the nature trail on this occasion but we did enjoy it last year.
I’m sure they would love it and learn lots.
How amazing to see the lambs being born. I’ve never seen lambs being born but I remember seeing a cow giving birth when I was a little girl and being utterly fascinated by it. Sounds like there was plenty of other things to do at Blaze Farm too and that you had a lovely day out 🙂 #countrykids
