Travelling with kids is usually a well-planned affair, requiring months of organization, and lasting for at least a week. But sometimes a little spontaneity makes a vacation even more exciting! Packing your bags and heading off for a weekend getaway with the family is a joyful experience, and one of the best things you can do together.
While more exotic, far-flung destinations might seem like the way to go when organizing a family vacation, there are loads of places you can discover for a weekend that are just as exciting, beautiful, and interesting.
So if you are thinking of a short trip or weekend adventure with your little ones, here are six of the best weekend adventures you can have with your family.
Go camping
Camping is one of the best things you can do with your kids and one of the easiest weekend getaways to organize. A trip to a campsite in the forest or by a lake gives your little ones freedom to roam, explore, and get up close and personal with nature. They’ll love hiking trails, climbing trees, and even doing the basics like putting up the tent, and there’s nothing like cooking dinner and making smores over a campfire at the end of the day to make a weekend getaway perfect.
Take a cruise
If you are looking for a combination of convenience and luxury, why not take a weekend cruise? While most cruises take you sailing for long periods of time, there are plenty of options for shorter itineraries. 3-day cruises sail to the Bahamas, Mexico, and even to the Western Caribbean, so you can indulge in a long weekend of sun, sand, and surf, and still get back in time for work on Monday morning!
Try an alternative outdoor adventure
Although ‘outdoor trips’ usually mean camping, there are so many other ways to explore the great outdoors, and plenty of options for outdoorsy weekend getaways. Find a cabin in the forest or a cozy mountain chalet and get adventurous with activities and sports like hiking, kayaking, mountain biking, or white water rafting! If you pick the right spot you can even add in a little ‘pioneer pampering’ as well, with natural hot springs or mud baths.
Head to the beach
Beach vacations don’t have to be solely the preserve of a long summer trip. There are loads of options for weekend sun and sand, that are surprisingly easy to get to. Both Florida and California, for example, boast some of the best beaches in the world, and there are awesome stretches of sand all over the place, if you know where to look. You could even grab a last-minute flight and head to somewhere like Puerto Rico or Bermuda, both surprisingly accessible and offering gorgeous paradise beaches!
Climb your nearest peak
A mountain adventure is one of the best ways to get the adrenaline flowing on a weekend getaway. Great mountains are not hard to find, and conquering a challenging peak or scaling a rock face together as a family is a great way to bond.
Go…nowhere?
Sometimes a weekend adventure doesn’t have to take you far from home. You might even be able to find magic and excitement just around the corner! A staycation is a wonderful way to explore your own hometown, and discover things you might not know about the amazing sights, sounds, tastes, and experiences just outside your own front door. Stay in a part of town you don’t know well and do the touristy things you never normally do. A staycation is also a great opportunity to tick off those ‘bucket list’ items that you’ve been meaning to do but never gotten around to.
