Have you considered taking your family on a European campervan or motorhome trip? There are so many great places to visit in Europe. We’ve just returned from 2 weeks in our Mazda Bongo campervan in the Netherlands. Below I will share our top tips for travelling in Europe with kids in a campervan and how you can hire a campervan for your next family holiday.
Start planning your dream European campervan trip
There are so many options for campervan holidays in Europe. The best place is to start thinking about how much driving you want to do. Some people see the driving as part of the holiday and like to move on every few days to try and see as much as possible.
Other prefer to do less driving and stay in one place longer. We are this type of family and has found that 3 campsites in 2 weeks is perfect for us. We also aren’t bothered for hot sunny days so we stik to Norther Europe.
If the sunshine is important to you, then you might consider driving further south in Europe. You an even be completely flexible by not booking campsites in advance so you can go where the weather forecast is best.
At this point you need to think about if there are any particular places that you want to visit. Perhaps you have always wanted to visit France or Switzerland. Or perhaps there is a family attraction that you’d really like to take your kids to. Did you know you can stay overnight in your campervan at Disneyland Paris? I can also recommend camping at Beekse Bergen in the Netherlands or visiting Eftling (a magical fairytale theme park).
Planning your route in Europe
Once you have decided where you want to visit it’s time to start planning your route. Again you can leave this totally flexible if that is your preferred style.
If you prefer to have a route planned before setting up then you need to think about this now. Alongside this you can start choosing campsites.
The first step is to plan your route into Europe. There are loads of ferry routes as well as the eurotunnel to choose from. The cost of each ferry route varies dramatically so shop around and consider the best route for you.
When we take our campervan to the Netherlands, we take the overnight ferry from Harwich to Hook of Holland. We find it to be easy to get to, very simple to do and the kids love the novelty of sleeping on the ferry overnight.
Choosing campsites
There are a wide variety of different types of campsites in Europe to choose from. I’d recommend you think about what type of campsite you want.
Do you want a large holiday site with all the facilities like swimming pools, play areas and more? Or do you prefer a smaller, simply campsite with much less faciliaities?
There are also options to camp on aires in countries like France which are really simple stop over sites for motorhomes and campervans.
Hiring a campervan
If you don’t have your own campervan then don’t worry you can still go on your dream campervan road trip. There are loads of options for campervan hire. Yescapa is like airbnb for campervans and it’s so easy to book a campervan for your family holiday. They have 12500 campervans being shared all over Europe! You can search for the right one for you on their website including pick up location and the dates you have in mind. You can find a wide variety of campervan types and sizes to find the perfect one for you.
Driving in Europe
Finally you need to think about driving in Europe if you haven’t done it before. It’s important to check the requirements for the countries you plan to drive in. You’ll find great guidelines for driving in Europe in your campervan here. I’d also recommend checking the government website for the countries to ensure you are completely up to date with what paperwork you need to carry, any special stickers you need etc.
