How to encourage kids to try new things

Child's hands holding up a copy of an orange book called create your own confidence

I have two daughters who both struggle with confidence at times as I’m sure many children do. There are loads of ways we can support them to grow their confidence including by encouraging them to try new things. This post will give you tips and I’ll include a review of a brand-new book that I’m sure you’ll love.

This post is an extra from a fantastic new book * Create Your Own Confidence has just been published it. It is a jam-packed activity book for 6-12 year olds written by psychotherapist Becky Goddard-Hill.

The book looks at 50 areas impacting kids’ confidence and presents solutions. Each topic includes an activity and is supported by science and research. There are activities to build confidence and one technique is gratitude such as through this Easy Gratitude Game. It is full of easy ways to help children feel confident and more robust about life. I also love these self esteem activities for girls.

Try New Things

New things can be scary BUT they can also be amazing- stepping outside of our comfort zone brings new opportunities and experiences that make life rich and exciting.

Neophilia

Research shows that trying new things boosts both physical and mental health and they call people’s wish for new experiences: neophilia. They discovered people who practice neophila tend to live longer and happier lives.

There are just so many benefits to trying new things:

Try new things – they may become your favourite!

Everything you now love; every hobby, friendship, taste or favourite place was once new to you and if you hadn’t pushed your comfort zone these awesome things would not be in your life.

Try new things – and keep on growing

If you sit still it is hard to grow in confidence, in courage or in skills. Push yourself a little and see all of these things bloom as you do.

Try new things – and reach your goals

Maybe you want to be a famous artist one day. Joining that new workshop or trying that new style might just help you to reach your goal.

The benefits that come with trying new things are huge.

Here are some outdoor adventures to help build confidence in secondary school students.

Create your own confidence review

This isn’t our first create your own book from Becky Goddard-Hill. I love the format of these books for kids. They’re easy to read, full of colourful illustrations to catch kids’ eyes and they’re packed with easy and fun activities for kids.

This book has 50 confidence boosting activities for kids and they’re all really fun! Each activity starts with an explanation of why the activity is needed for example why perfection is not necessary, limiting beliefs, loving your body etc. Then an explanation of how the activity will help and then the activity idea.

I love the mix of activities, inspiring quotes, the science behind the activities and the fun activities too. It’s all written in a way that is easy for children to read and understand. My 9 year old daughter picked this book straight up and started reading it!

It’s written as a book that you can dip in and out of and I can see that my daughter is going to love this. I can’t wait to watch her confidence grow.

Create Your Own Confidence is published by Harper Collins and is out now
