There’s something about being away that makes sitting outside feel effortless. Long lunches in the sun, warm evenings, bright planting, comfy chairs, it all adds up to that sense of escape. The nice thing is you don’t actually need to get on a plane for any of it. A few small changes can turn your own garden into somewhere calm and welcoming to spend time in, right through spring and summer.
Looking at a Mediterranean garden is a decent starting point, especially if you’ve got a sunny spot and like natural textures, aromatic herbs and warm, earthy tones. You don’t need to copy any particular place exactly. It’s more about picking up on the details that make outdoor spaces abroad feel so relaxed, then working those into your own garden in a way that suits how you actually live.
Somewhere Comfortable to Sit
A garden starts to feel like a holiday spot the moment there’s somewhere decent to sit. Think about how you’d actually use the space. Maybe that’s a table for family meals, a quiet corner for reading, or just a couple of chairs for morning coffee.
You don’t need a huge patio or loads of furniture to make this work. A small bistro set, a bench, even a pair of good chairs can do the job in a smaller garden. Cushions and throws soften things up nicely, particularly once the evenings turn a bit cooler. It’s worth positioning your seating to catch the best view of the garden, rather than just putting it wherever there happens to be room.
More Greenery
Plants do a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to making a garden feel relaxing. Mixing foliage, flowers and different heights softens all the hard landscaping and makes a space feel more settled. If your garden’s mostly patio or decking, big pots are an easy way to bring in more green. Grouping several containers together tends to look better than dotting single pots around.
Go for a few different heights and shapes to keep things interesting, taller plants give structure, while lower flowers and trailing plants soften the edges. Repeating a few of the same plants in different spots helps tie the whole thing together too.
Warm, Natural Materials
What you build and furnish with makes a real difference to the mood of a garden. Terracotta pots, timber furniture, gravel, natural stone, these all lean into that relaxed, holiday feel. They read as softer and less formal than anything too polished or new-looking.
