The Insider’s Guide: Spending 48 Hours in Liverpool

Collaborative post

If you are looking for a weekend trip within the UK, we usually think of the three main cities, like London, Birmingham and Manchester. However, if you are wondering where to explore next, there is no better place to go to than Liverpool.Liverpool is the perfect city to go to whether you are with a few friends or with your family. There is something for everyone. This blog post covers a few pointers on what to do and where to stay in the city over a weekend to make sure you can make the most out of your brief visit.

Saturday Morning: Getting to Liverpool

You can get to Liverpool quite easily by car or via train to Lime Street station. A fun fact about the station is that it is the oldest grand terminus mainline station still in use in the world. Lime Street station is situated in the centre of town, so you won’t have to worry about getting on any other connecting transport to get to your hotel. There are a few hotels in Liverpool that offer a unique experience, below are some of my favourite hotels in the city:

The hotel with the best view – The Titanic Hotel

Titanic Hotel is one of the best luxury hotels in Liverpool with elegant rooms, leisure facilities and quality dining. It was originally a warehouse and is only a few minutes away from the docks. The hotel overlooks the Mersey and the rooms are extraordinary to stay in. The hotel has its own spa if you fancy relaxing as well.

The hotel with the most extraordinary experience – The Shankly Hotel

The Shankly Hotel is situated within a five-minute radius from the infamous Matthew Street, home of the famous Cavern Club. This hotel prides itself in its humungous uniquely themed rooms. The suites are perfect for getting the party started ahead of a night out, with multiple beds, a 50inch TV screen, a jacuzzi and more!

Saturday Afternoon:

Once you’ve checked in, you can wander around the town centre. Familiarise yourself with Liverpool ONE, the contemporary open-air shopping complex, described as one of Europe’s leading retail and leisure destinations. The shopping centre is closely intertwined with the existing streets of Liverpool and located right by the iconic waterfront. If you’re looking for a place to shop, eat, drink and relax, Liverpool ONE is the place to be.

Saturday Evening:

There’s plenty of restaurants around the city centre for you to try. There’s a place for any cuisine you can think of, namely some of my favourite choices include:

  • The Club House
  • Chaophraya
  • Heavenly Desserts
  • Roxy Ball Room
  • Yard and Coop
  • Bem Brasil

Sunday Morning:

Rather than spending the Sunday in the centre of town, you can venture out to different parts of Liverpool for a more authentic, rustic side of the city via Bold Street. You can find a wide selection of independent cafes and restaurants for you to have breakfast in on this street. Once you’re done, you can continue walking up towards the landmarks of Liverpool.

The Liverpool Cathedral

The Liverpool Cathedral is the largest cathedral and religious building in Britain. The building itself took 74 years to construct and is highly impressive when you see it in person.

The Bluecoat

The Bluecoat is Liverpool’s creative hub, it is the oldest surviving building in central Liverpool and now houses all sorts of visual art, music, dance, live art and literature.

Sunday Afternoon:

Once you have had a look around some of the more historic parts of Liverpool, you can head to the Baltic Triangle. It is a recent redevelopment project that has revived a derelict industrial area. Some of the places you can visit in the Baltic Triangle include:

Ghetto Golf

Ghetto Golf is one of Liverpool’s latest prized possessions, it is a warehouse turned mini-golf location that adults love. With its unique themes and loud music, it is a place for adults to let loose and enjoy themselves (preferably with a cocktail and a hot dog in hand).

Baltic Market

The Baltic Market is a food market that encourages local restaurants to host a stall. This is perfect if you are feeling adventurous and would like to try different kinds of food, or if you are with a group of people, this place will guarantee that there is a snack that suits everyone’s taste buds.

The Brick Hangar

Liverpool as a city is a big supporter of local businesses. The Brick Hangar is full of unique stalls that sell local crafts and goods. You’ll be able to find all sorts of things in this place, from vintage to innovative products and plenty more.

Sunday Evening:

Before you have to head on home on the train, you can walk up the St George’s quarter to Lime Street, enjoying the view of Liverpool’s World Museum, Central Library, Walker Art Gallery and St George’s Hall. This is just an idea of how I would spend my weekend in Liverpool. Let me know below how you would spend a day around the city and whether you have any personal recommendations of your own.
