Materials

  • 1 cup baking soda
  • Water
  • Orange food coloring (or red and yellow)
  • Green pipe cleaner

Instructions

    1. Step 1: Make the Pumpkin Paste
      In a bowl, mix the baking soda with a small amount of water until a thick, moldable paste forms. Add a few drops of orange food coloring and stir until the color is evenly mixed. A bowl of thick orange dough mixture being prepared for the fizzy pumpkins experiment, with some mixture spread around the sides of the metal bowl.
    2. Step 2: Shape the Pumpkins
      Roll the paste into pumpkin-shaped balls. Gently press small pieces of green pipe cleaner into the tops to create stems.
    3. Step 3: Set Up the Experiment
      Place the pumpkins in a shallow tray or dish to catch the fizzing reaction.
    4. Step 4: Add the Vinegar
      Fill a dropper with vinegar and slowly squeeze it onto the pumpkins. Watch as the vinegar reacts with the baking soda, creating bubbles and foam. The science behind the fizz!

Preschool children don’t need to understand the science behind the reaction to enjoy it but older children might ask questions and like to know what is going on. 

When baking soda and vinegar are combined they create a fizzy reaction. The bubbles created are due to the carbon dioxide gas escaping. This causes the pumpkin to fizz up and it feels really magical for young kids.

You use a tray underneath your pumpkins to contain the liquid that forms as a result of the chemical reaction. This makes cleaning up a lot easier. You could even do this activity outside so that mess is less of an issue.
