The best STEM toys for 3 year olds

Learning Resources make by far the best STEM toys for kids on the market in my opinion, particularly for young children. We have a fair number of their toys now and love them all.

They always work so well and are well designed with children in mind. They help develop children’s natural curiosity and help them learn through play. They are all really well made and last well. The ones we have and that I’m reviewing or recommending below are designed for young children. They’re easy to use and ergonomically designed for little hands.

Learning Resources My first microscope review

My first microscope is part of the Geosafri Jr range. It’s suitable from 3 years old and is a fantastic STEM toy for 3 year olds and over. It’s a fully working microscope with 8x magnification as well as an LED light to help illuminate the object.

As soon as the box arrived my 3 year old was excited to get the microscope out. The bright colours attract children’s attention and this microscope encourages children’s natural curiosity.

We started by using the microscope to explore a pine cone and I look forward to using it regularly to further explore the natural world with my children. Things like leaves, flowers and even bugs.

The microscope is really well designed and my daughter had no problems using it. She enjoyed the pine cone and was soon off hunting for small toys to view without needing my help.

Learning Resources Primary Science Lab set review

The primary science lab set contains 22 pieces including 10 activity cards, lab-style glasses, magnifying glass, tweezers, eyedropper, funnel, flask, beaker and test tubes with lids and stands. It is suitable from 3 years old.

These items are all made of plastic and are durable and safe for little hands. We love the bright colours. The 10 activity cards are large, double-sided, wipe clean and include clear step by step instructions and some photos to illustrate the activities.

Colour mixing fun

The activities on these cards are all simple, classic, kitchen science experiments for kids. We started by trying to make a mini volcano (using vinegar and sodium bicarbonate) and then moved on to colour mixing.

My daughter loved these experiments and spent ages using the eyedropper and funnel to move the water between the various flasks and test tubes. I love that this lab set not only encourages a love of science and experimenting but also builds fine motor skills.
