Without a doubt, England has some of the best castles in the whole of the UK. With there being such a high number dotted around the country, it can be difficult to pinpoint what few to visit, especially since some are a great distance away.
Whether you’re looking to take the kids on a little trip or want to learn more about England’s history, we’ve got you covered. Here are four of our favourite castles that we think you should visit this year.
Conisbrough Castle
Steeped in history, Conisbrough castle is both educational and a pleasure. Whilst mostly ruins, the castle has a 90ft high great white circular keep alongside six buttresses – the oldest of its type left standing in the country.
On each floor of the castle, you can find staged displays hidden away and interactive activities for the kids, like reconstruction drawings and object handling.
There are hot and cold food stalls outside but you’re more than welcome to bring your own lunch for a picnic on the grounds. You can even bring a bat and ball with you as games are permitted on the grass.
If you’re travelling from the capital, to get to Conisbrough Castle you’ll first want to organise your London to Doncaster train tickets. Once you arrive in Doncaster, you then have several options: you can either get the train to Conisbrough or get a taxi directly to the castle. Both take around 7-10 minutes.
Warwick Castle
Put on your imaginary crown for the day and see how the powerful Dukes of Northumberland once lived. The ultimate historical experience for the family, here you’ll find exhilarating live shows and exhibits all year round, including live arena jousting performances.
There’s also the Castle Dungeon, should you be brave enough to venture inside. Lasting around 50 minutes, this exciting show features live actors and spectacular effects, which are sure to send chills down your spine. You can even stay overnight in medieval themes Lodges throughout the year – or medieval glamping if that’s more your thing.
Dover Castle
Emerging above the world-famous White Cliffs way above the Channel, Dover Castle is an embodiment of Britain. Built shortly after 1066, the fortress has been the setting for heroic sieges, most notably the evacuation of Allied troops during Dunkirk.
Discover the medieval recreated rooms of the Great Tower and listen to the story of Dunkirk in an immersive exhibition. There are 80 acres of grounds at the castle to explore, perfect for a day out with the family. Don’t forget to visit the Roman lighthouse and the medieval tunnels.
Tintagel Castle
Located on Cornwall’s north coast, Tintagel Castle is the perfect place to immerse yourself in history and stunning landscapes. With links to the legendary King Arthur, be prepared to explore rich headland and find medieval remains. Many famous writers and royals have been inspired here, now it’s your turn! Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the cliffs and keep an eye out for seals that often play in the waters below. If you head down to sea level and walk across the sandy beach, you’ll come to Merlin’s Cave. And you must also journey across the award-winning footbridge here.
