Getting everyone ready to enjoy winter activities

As you know, we like being outside. It is always great to go for a walk, even if the weather is not fantastic. We always make sure we are properly kitted out for the winter well in advance, so we can carry on enjoying outdoor activities. If you are looking for inspiration for days out, don’t forget to have a look through my day’s out blog post.

New coats and jackets

Now is a good time to get everyone to try on their winter coats and jackets. That way you can check that they still fit and look good. It is worth getting their hats, scarves and gloves out too, that way if anyone has only one glove you can just pop out and buy them a new pair.

If they are not waterproof consider spraying them or buying a lightweight showerproof shell jacket or coat that can be worn over the top. Often this is cheaper than buying a brand new one.

Jumpers and trousers

When you have everyone try on their jackets and coats make sure that they wear a jumper as well. You also need to make sure there is enough room in their jeans and trousers for them to be able to slip on a pair of jogging bottoms or leggings underneath. We all tend to put on the pounds more easily than we lose them, so there is a good chance that you will have to buy a pair of bigger trousers to wear on the coldest days.

It is especially important that you check over everyone┬┤s footwear. If shoes or boots fit, but the soles are a bit worn get them re-soled. Just be sure to ask for a quote before you hand them over to the cobbler. Sometimes it is just as cheap to buy a new pair of shoes as it is to have them repaired. You should also check that the soles are non-slip. This will make a huge difference when the pavements are icy and slippery.

Everyone needs at least one pair of waterproof boots in their wardrobe for wearing on days when it rains heavily. If someone does not already own a suitable pair consider spraying what they already own with a good-quality waterproof spray. It’s a quick, and surprisingly effective, way to stop the water getting in. However, you cannot use the same product on every material. If you use the wrong spray it is easy to ruin a perfectly good pair of boots. This short video explains exactly what you should use for each type of footwear.

Hand warmers and other gadgets

If you are planning to spend time attending sporting events it is worth in considering kitting everyone out with items like hand and foot warmers. They work really well and are perfect for when you cannot avoid standing around in the cold. For an elderly member of the family or someone who really feels the cold, it may be worth investing in a heated jacket. Over the past couple of years, the price of these items has fallen drastically, so they are more affordable than most people think.

Great post. Dex is with a childminder who goes out everyday and this has been really useful in getting me to think about what he needs to take with him as winter starts approaching. Wellies are going to be a must in this British weather!
