Bite away pen in use on child's arm

We spend a lot of time outdoors as a family. We particularly enjoy camping and family walks as well as other outdoor activities for children. Time in nature is so beneficial to adults and children but there are a few minor downsides and one is insect bites. Find out more about a really simple insect bite treatment in my Bite away® review.

Ad – we were sent a bite away® for the purposes of this review. I was also compensated for my time. All thought, opinions and photos are my own.

We’ve all been there. You’re enjoying time in the garden or a family day out and someone gets an insect bite. Particularly if it is a young child, this can often spoil the outing. I still remember how upset my eldest was when she stood on a bee and it stung her. She was clearly in a lot of pain and discomfort and I wish we’d had a bite away® at the time.

What is bite away®?

Bite away® is a chemical free, medical device that can provide symptomatic relief from the pain, itching and swelling caused by insect bites. This includes bites from bees, wasps, mosquitos, horseflies, hornets and other biting insects.

How does bite away® work?

Bite away® uses concentrating heat at 51°C on to the bite area (localises hyperthermia). This decreases itching through inhibiting the neuronal itch signalling pathway at pain receptors. Heat shock to mast cells also releases histamine and decreases other inflammatory mediators, reducing swelling.

Bite away® can reduce pain, swelling and itch in only 2 minutes.

How to use bite away®

I love how simple bite away® is to use. Simply place the ceramic plate end of the device on the bite and press the 3 second or 5-second button. The device quickly heats to 51°C, maintains the heat for 3-5 seconds and then switches off automatically.

3 seconds is recommended for the first application and for sensitive skin. 5 second is suitable for regular application. You can treat the same bite up to 5 times in an hour, waiting at least 2 minutes between applications.

What we love about bite away®

I love that bite away® is only slightly bigger than a pen and lightweight. It’s easy to carry around in your handbag or walking rucksack. That way you can quickly and effectively treat an insect bite before it spoils a family day out.

Bite away® is clinically proven to reduce pain from insect bites. One study proved that pain had almost disappeared 10 minutes after application. It it also dermatologically tested. Safe to use in pregnancy, on children and on allergy sufferers.

Our Bite away now lives in our walking backpack. We’ve used it on small inset bites already with good success but we haven’t been unlucky enough to experience a bee or wasp sting yet. I know when we do I’ll be reaching for this great device.
