Picture books for mother’s day

With mother’s day just around the corner, I’ve put together a list of the perfect picture books for mother’s day. I love reading books with my daughters, particularly at bedtime. We only ever miss bedtime stories if we are getting home late and the kids are already asleep in the car. Find all the best children’s books here. 

It’s lovely to snuggle up together and share a book, especially after a busy day. As mother’s day approaches, what better time than to pick up a book that celebrates the special bond between mother and child. Books marked with # have been sent to me by the publishers.

Superhero mum, Timothy knapman, Joe Berger #

Everyone thinks their mum is a superhero and in this book, one little girl shares how her mum really is. This bright and colourful book is all about how amazing mums are for looking after their children. From finding missing toys, chasing away tears when we’re sad or hurt and making up games to keep little ones entertained. This version is perfect for toddlers as it’s a sturdy board book. I’ve really been enjoying reading this book with my daughters. They really enjoy it. Don’t worry there’s a *superhero dad book too.

How to say I love you in five languages, Kennard Pak #

Whilst not directly about mums, this fun board book is still perfect for mother’s day as it’s about saying I love you. It’s a sound book with beautiful illustrations that teaches children to say I love you in English, French, Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin. My girls are really enjoying repeating the phrases. It’s very cute hearing a two year old trying to speak French or Spanish.

My mum always looks after me so much! Sean Taylor & David Barrow #

We love this heartwarming story about a little gorilla and his mum who are going to the doctors to get little gorilla his injection. We learn all about how much his mum looks after him too such as when he is ill or when he loses something like in this story. A sweet little story to read with your little ones. The illustrations are unique and beautiful too. Not only is this a great book to read around mother’s day but it would also be good to read before your child has to get any injections.

Hattie peck, Emma Levey #

This is a beautiful book about a chicken that has only ever laid one egg, which didn’t even hatch. Instead, Hattie, the chicken makes it her mission to collect all the abandoned eggs, collect them and hatch them all. She adventures all over the world in search of these eggs and takes them all home. Then she sits on her ginormous pile of eggs until they all hatch. Once all the eggs hatch Hattie soon becomes the perfect mum to her assortment of “babies”. A truly beautiful story. We also love the follow-up, * The journey home where she adventures all over the world again but this time to help her family that she has lovingly raised fly the nest. Of course, there is a lovely surprise, happy ending.

Guess how much I love you, Sam McBratney, Anita Jeram

This is a classic story for a reason. A beautiful tale of a big and a little hare who are competing to be the one that loves the other the most. They come up with bigger and bigger ways of showing their love for the other but each is determined to have the last word. A super cute story to read at any time but especially so on Mother’s day.

Mummy fairy and me, Sophie Kinsella #

My girls both love fairies and unicorns so I knew these books would be well-loved. My eldest is 5 and we’ve recently started reading chapter books together and this collection has become an instant hit.

Ella’s mum might look like everyone’s mum but she has a big secret. She just needs to stamp her feet 3 times, clap her hands, wiggle her bum and say Marshmellow and she turns into a fairy. The only problem is, she’s not particularly good at magic.

All her spells end in hilarious consequences much to my daughter’s delight. I love seeing her face light up and her laughing along with the story. These are short chapter books with plenty of illustrations, the perfect first chapter book. We love these stories as they are funny books that celebrate the mother/daughter relationship.
