Summer is a classic time for a wedding. It allows an outdoor reception to stretch long into the evening, without the need for firepits and patio heaters. It also makes rain a little less likely… though in the UK, nothing is certain!

Given that a clear majority of weddings take place at this time of year, it makes sense to put together a wardrobe that’s suited to the season. Let’s look at what you might wear to a wedding in summer.

Choose Breathable Fabrics

For one thing, you’ll need to avoid becoming a sweaty mess, especially if you’re sitting outdoors. This is where Linen, chiffon, and certain cotton blends can be worthwhile. They’ll allow even a modest breeze to circulate around the surface of your skin.

Go for Soft, Seasonal Colours

Bold, vibrant colours tend to draw attention. But more muted, pastel-style hues might be a safer and classier option, especially in an outdoor venue. If you’re in doubt, keep it muted, but have one or two more saturated tones to draw upon too.

Accessorise With Intention

The jewellery you wear makes a difference, too. Obviously, the wedding rings themselves are going to be at the centre of attention but that doesn’t mean that guests can’t add to their ensembles with the help of a little decoration, here and there. Pick out something that matches your taste, and the rest of your outfit. What goes with a big pair of hoop-style earrings might be a poor match for a more reserve, subtle pair.

Pick Comfortable Footwear

You’re going to be on your feet for much of the day, so you’ll want to think about what you’re going to be walking on, and how you’re going to stay comfortable without compromising on style. Flats tend to be a great option for beaches and gardens. If you’re in a historic church, then towering heels might be a poor match for those uneven cobblestones underfoot.

Keep Makeup Fresh and Light

If you’re outdoors in summer, then you might end up sweating quite a bit. This can be bad news if you’re heavily daubed in makeup. Try to prefer lighter, longer-wearing formulas, or those that can be addressed as the day goes on. If in doubt, try to road-test a few options the next time the UK experiences a heat wave.
