The best beaches in Anglesey

To make it easy for you to locate the beach you want to visit, I have included a google map below with all the beaches I will be talking about below. These are what I believe are the best Anglesey beaches to visit. We’ve been visiting Anglesey multiple times a year for the past decade so have done the research for you. My children have spent many happy hours on all these beaches. We love beach trips whatever the weather (well apart from during stormy weather), find our favourite beach activities for children here.

As of 2020 there are 6 blue flag beaches in Anglesey. They are Trearddur bay, Church bay, Porth Dafarch, Benllech, Llanddona and Newborough.

Newborough beach

We love visiting Newborough forest and beach. The beach is also known as Llanddwyn beach. It’s a gorgeous long stretch of sandy beach with sand dunes and the forest behind the beach and with views of the Snowdon mountain range. There is a car park which you access by driving through the forest which gives very easy access to the beach. There are toilet facilities and picnic tables in the car park. At the time of writing, it currently costs £5 for all-day parking. There is also a free car park at the top of the forest which is free but it is over a mile walk to the beach.

When the tide is out you can walk out to Llanddwyn Island which isn’t quite an island but is a beautiful walk and the small bay at the end is not only stunning but it is sheltered too. There are also wild ponies on the island and various historical buildings and monuments. It’s a lovely walk if you have kids that can walk a couple of miles each way or if you have a little one in a back carrier. It’s not a pram friendly walk and bear in mind there are no facilities except for in the main car park.

Aberffraw beach

Aberffraw is another gorgeous beach that requires a bit of walking to get to from the parking. This time you need to walk either through the sand dunes or along the river bank until you meet the sea and the gorgeous sandy beach. Make sure you pack everything you need. It’s a bit of a trek to the beach and there are no facilities or shops once you reach the beach. Well worth it though in my opinion. We’ve spent many lovely days there playing on the beach and paddling in the sea and have often found the beach very quiet.

Rhosneiger

Rhosneiger has two long sandy beaches which are very popular with water sports enthusiasts, particularly windsurfers. There is even a surf school right on the beach. There is plenty of on street parking near by as well as a small village car park. Close to the beach are a number of small shops and cafes. The crepe cafe is one of our favourites and I love a browse in the little shops which sell a mix of outdoor clothing and gifts. There is even a small Fat Face shop.

Beaumaris beach

The beach at Beaumaris is not one of the best beaches as it is a very small pebble beach but the pier is a fantastic place to go crabbing and there is a large paddling pool and play area right behind the lifeboat station. Beaumaris is a gorgeous town to visit with loads of lovely independent shops (Janet Bell is a must-visit), cafes (Red boat sells delicious gelato), a second playground right behind the castle and of course Beaumaris castle itself.

Penmon

Penmon is another small pebble beach but this time you can see puffin island and there is a black and white lighthouse too. The only access is via a toll road, currently £3.

Cemaes bay

Cemaes bay is a really picturesque seaside village. There is a small harbour and 2 beaches (big beach and little beach). We love that there is plenty of sand to play on but also rockpools too. There is a car park right on the seafront too. We love the sea bell too (pictured below) which chimbs at high tide.

Lligwy beach

Lligwy is a wide, sandy beach near to Molfre. Like Rhosneiger, this beach is popular with watersport enthusiasts as well as families. There is car parking, toilets and a small shop.

Trearddur bay

Another great family beach is Trearddur bay. There are 2 car parks (one with toilet facilities) nearby as well as playground across the road. There are a number of shops, bars, restaurants and a hotel near by. This is a long sandy beach with some rockpools too. Popular with families and boat users. We love walking along the promenade, playing on the beach and playground and of course, getting an ice cream (find ice cream vans by the life boat station or get one from The Sea Shanty ice cream parlour).

Porth Dafarch

We love this small cove not far from Holyhead. Get there early as there is not a lot of parking (free roadside parking, no nearby car park) but there are toilets and usually an ice cream van. Access to the beach is easy too with a slipway ramp. We love this small cove for rockpools and the sandy beach and clear blue seas.

Church bay

Church bay, also known as Porth Swtan is a sand and pebble beach which is backed be cliffs. The water is clear and popular with swimmers. There are also rockpools to be found on this beach. Access is via a steep footpath from the village.

Red Wharf bay

At low tide, there are 10 square miles of sand on this beach which is also a nature reserve with an abundance of wildlife. The beach is backed by salt marshes and sand dunes. Llanddona Beach is a long sandy beach at the Eastern end of the bay.

Benllech

Benllech beach has beautiful clear seas and is a large sandy beach. It is easy to get pushchairs and good access for disabled people too. At low tide the beach stretches for miles. There is plenty of parking nearby and also toilets, a small cafe and shops nearby. It makes a great family day out on the east side of the island.
