Children's books about gardening - fiction
These stories about gardening, plants and flowers are perfect for inspiring a love of gardening in young children. After a day in the garden, these are the perfect stories to read together at bedtime.
This is a beautiful book that is perfect for nature-loving kids. The illustrations are truly beautiful and simple in some ways but also quite detailed. The story is a simple one about a little girl who lives in a magic garden and the changes that happen in her garden through the day and night and across the seasons. Children will enjoy the story without realising that they are learning lots about nature.
At the end of the book, there are a few pages of more factual content. These short questions and answers are great for helping curious kids learn about different things like why and how do spiders spin and weave? and how do snakes eat meals that are bigger than they are? I love how this book inspires kids to slow down and notice what is going on around them.
This is a gorgeous board book full of flaps and cut out bits that my girls love. The illustrations are colourful and rich in detail. It’s packed full of information about our gardens, including the insects and wildlife that we share them with, the vegetable patch and the compost heap.

The illustrations are colourful and engaging for children. It’s perfect for toddlers as there isn’t too much text on each page so it helps to keep their attention. It’s a lovely book about a little girl who wants to grow flowers. The story starts with buying the seeds, caring for them and finishes with Lul and her friends playing in her beautiful flower garden. Another great book for inspiring and teaching young children about gardening.
This is a truly beautiful book that we have completely fallen in love with. The illustrations are as adorable as the story.
Ruby lives in a caravan with her grandmother who has taught her to treat everyone and everything with respect. In the story, we learn about all the things they love including their garden as well as keeping hens, drinking tea and napping in the garden.
Kate uses words and beautiful illustrations to teach children about enjoying the simple things in life. This book is part of a series of books about Ruby and I can’t wait to read the others. This book is perfect for children 3+.

I’m really rubbish at gardening, but would really like to learn more myself and the children have been doing gardening with their grandparents over the summer so I think they would enjoy some of these. #KLTR
The magic garden sounds great. I love how you shared these books but also how you staged the images with garden tools too! So cute! #KLTR
I may have had to buy the Usborne gardening book when I saw it. They sure are excellent publishers. #KLTR
