When you’re thinking about updating your interior design, it can be incredibly exciting. There’s definitely a lot to get done, and so much inspiration out there to help you. But, alongside the styling that you want to stick to, you really do have to make sure that everything you’re doing is practical. And this can be a tough balance to achieve. Especially in rooms like the kids’ playroom! Because this is a room that is really there for functional reasons – yet you still want the decor to go with the rest of the house. So, it’s all about finding a balance. So let’s take a look at how you can decorate this space in a cute but practical way.
1. Choose A Theme
So first of all, to make sure that you can get the fun part right in the balance, it’s often a great idea to pick out a theme. Otherwise, you may find that it all looks a little thrown together. Whether this is fairytales, color splashes, Disney themed, or even a circus – or anything that your children like, make sure that you pick out one overarching theme that you can work with. As this will help you to bring everything together.
Try to find as many pieces as you can that compliment this theme, and you can do this either online or in a variety of home stores. For example, you might find a cute pink rug to match a fairytale theme, or an awesome car wall decal for a racer room.
2. Design The Walls
When you know what you want to do with the styling, you can then get to work on the walls and flooring. Here, you have a range of options. Think about whether you want to do creative wallpaper, or even go in with a color and use poster frames to add some design. Always try to keep the flooring choice practical here and let the walls do the talking.
3. Pick Out Fun Storage
An important part of this room is going to be the storage. And yes, this is the most practical part. Because you will find that most of the children’s’ toys will be kept in here – but you still don’t want the space to be a mess. So it’s important to make sure that you have solid storage choices around the entire room to keep everything in order.
4. Create A Den
At this point, you may also want to add in some really sweet and exciting attractions too. Take a look at these playroom den design ideas for inspiration. Maybe you want to create a tent or teepee that they can play in? Or maybe add a table and chairs for painting and homework? Or maybe a story time chair? Just think about how you can make the space both practical and entertaining at the same time.
5. Make It Durable
Lastly, you should also aim to make the space as hard wearing as possible. Sure, you want it to look nice, but you will want to make sure that the walls are wipeable if they’re drawn on, and that the flooring isn’t going to get messed up with any paints! While ideally, your kids won’t be overly crazy in their playroom, you never know what will happen. So if you’re picking out decor options that are durable, then you’re going to be on to a winner!
