Tiger, Tiger, burning bright, an animal poem for every day of the year
This book is the follow up to the beautiful book I am the seed that grew the tree which I reviewed 3 years ago when it was first released. Just like the original, this book is a collaboration between Nosy Crow and National Trust. They have collaborated on a lot of gorgeous children’s books and this one is no exception.
There are 366 poems in this book. Yes, the book is over an inch thick! That’s 366 poems, all arranged into chapters for each month of the year and each poem numbered with the date. This means you can choose to dip into this book daily and read the poem selected for that day or perhaps you’ll choose to read all the ones first that are on special dates like your birthday.
The poems have been selected by Fiona Waters and each one is based on animals. The poems have been selected from all over the world too. My children love animals so this poetry anthology all about animals is simply perfect for them.
The poems are a mixture of different lengths and styles. The poems span over 400 years. Just like the previous book, it’s a fantastic introduction to poetry for children.
The illustrations are by Britta Teckentrup and they are simply stunning. We have a number of books by this illustrator as in my opinion she creates some of the best nature books for children. Britta’s illustrations on every page of this book really enhance the reading experience. My girls love the illustrations and will often talk about them before we read the poems.
This is a gorgeous book that wouldn’t be out of place on your coffee table. Adults will love reading these beautiful poems to children as much as the children will enjoy listening to them and looking at the stunning illustrations.
At the back of the book there is an index of the poets included in the book as well as the poem titles and also an index of the first lines of each poem listed alphabetically. Each chapter of the book starts with a list of the poem titles and poem names.
Some of the poems in the book are well known classics like Tiger, Tiger, Shining bright but many of the other poems are completly new to me. I can honestly say I love reading this book to my kids and much as they enjoy listening to the poems.
