Christmas books for kids
Reading festive books with my children is one of my favourite things to do in December. One of our families Christmas traditions is our book advent calendar.
Over the years we have collected quite a few Christmas books. They are mostly new Christmas books but we do have a few Christmas classics that I can remember from my own childhood.
The tree that’s meant to be, Yuval Zommer #
This book is simply beautiful. The illustrations are stunning and the story is fantastic too.
One little tree is too small and imperfect to be taken home for Christmas but in this heart-warming story the tree is rewarded for being left alone in the forest.

I love you Father Christmas, Giles Andreae, Emma Dodd
This book is full of Giles Andreae’s trademark rhymes. It perfectly captures the excitement of Christmas for kids. The words really flow well together and it’s a pleasure to read.
The illustrations are bright and bold and really enrich the story too. If you are looking for a Christmas book for young children that you won’t mind reading again and again then, this is the perfect book for you.

Winnie and Wilbur the Santa Surprise, Laura Owen, Korky Paul
We love Winnie and Wilbur books (there’s two in this list after all). This is the first chapter book of their’s that we have read. We love it just as much as their picture books.
This is another perfect first chapter book as there are full colour illustrations on most pages. It really is just like an extended picture book.
The story itself is a fun-filled festive adventure about Winnie’s idea to surprise Santa with a Christmas gift of his very own.

Step into the Nutcracker #
This might be a board book but it is definitely aimed at preschool children. There is too much text for toddlers and babies. It’s a lovely adaptation of this classic story though that you are sure to love.
Along with the story, we love the colourful illustrations and the fun cut out pages.

A thing called snow, Yuval Zommer #
This is more of a winter book than Christmas really but it is such a beautiful story set in an artic world. Sometimes it’s nice to break all the Christmas stories up with something wintery.
This story is a tale of bear, fox and hare as they set off in search of snow. It’s a true celebration of winter. The illustrations are as beautiful and rich with detail as the story.

Magnificent Mabel and the Christmas Elf, Ruth Quayle, Julia Christians #
If your child is just starting to read chapter books, this is a perfect first Christmas Chapter book. The text is large, the chapters short and there are illustrations throughout the book too.
Meet Mabel. Sometimes life isn’t fair for her. In this book, her Christmas Elf gets her into lots of trouble as well as lots of other things. This makes for 3 laugh out loud funny stories all in one book.

A house for Christmas mouse, Rebessa Harry #
This is a really sweet story about a mouse who is s kind and helpful to all the animals he meets on the way to find himself a home for Christmas. Luckily they’re on hand to repay the favours and create mouse a cosy home for Christmas.

Twas the night before Christmas
There are many versions of this classic Christmas book. The poem is always the much loved classic that we all grew up with but the illustrations change. You’re sure to find the version that’s perfect for your family.
In my opinion there is no other book to read on Christmas eve. Despite the language being a little outdated now, this poem rolls off the tongue and perfectly captures the excitement of Christmas eve.

The snowiest Christmas ever, Jane Chapman #
Children love Christmas and snow so when the two combine you know you are in for a magical read. Who’s wishing for a white Christmas this year? If so you’ll love this book. It perfectly captures all the magic. The illustrations are cute too.

The most wonderful gift in the world, Mark Sperring, Lucy Flemming #
This is the cutest Christmas book ever. On Christmas morning, a magnificent, red-wrapped gift sits underneath the tree. But it isn’t for Esme. And it isn’t for Bear. So they set out to find the rightful owner.
They make the most treacherous journey ever to find the owner of the gift only to find out the real gift is the gift of friendship. Such an adorable story with beautiful illustrations to match.

The jolly Christmas postman, Janet and Allan Ahlberg
Hands up who remembers this book from their childhood? Such a beautiful and fun book. It’s Christmas Eve and the jolly postman is out delivering mail to all your favourite fairy tale characters. Kids love the interactive nature of the envelopes with different post inside. So much fun for all.

The Christmasaurus, Tom Fletcher
I first read this book to my eldest when she was 5. I enjoyed reading it as much as she enjoyed listening to it and looking at all the illustrations.
We have the follow-up book too (details further down this post) and truly these are fantastic books that you will love as much as your kids. Laugh out loud funny and perfectly capture the magic of Christmas for kids.

The Christmas unicorn, Anna Currey
This is a really sweet Christmas book that my two unicorn obsessed daughters love. In this heart warming book, a little girl is staying with her grandpa and is lonely. She has a magical encounter with a unicorn which leaders her to a new friendship with a little girl on the same street as her grandpa lives.

Sammy Claws the Christmas cat,
This book is so much fun and a bit different from most festive reads. Who would think that a cat could save Christmas from two robbers trying to steal all the presents?

I love you more than Christmas, Ellie Hatie, Tim Warnes #
Little bear loves Christmas and so does mummy and daddy bear. This book is a true celebration of the magic of Christmas. Is there anything that they love more than Christmas though? Such a sweet festive story and the illustrations are lovely too.

The Christmasaurus and the winter witch, Tom Fletcher
The follow up to the amazing The Christmasaurus is every bit as magical and entertaining. These books are a pleasure to read to children and I’m sure older children will enjoy reading them too.
My 6 year old loved listening to a chapter of this book each night last year. It really captures the magic of Christmas and is laugh out loud funny.
